JUDGE DENIES REQUEST TO HALT BURNING OF BOMB HOUSE IN ESCONDIDO

December 8, 2010 (Escondido) – A federal judge has denied a final-hour plea by accused bombmaker George Jakubec to halt the burning of the home he rented in Escondido. Authorities plan to proceed tomorrow morning with plans to burn down the residence and the massive stash of explosives and chemicals inside.

Attorney Michael Berg argued in a motion filed yesterday that “Mr. Jakubec is potentially prohibited from developing defense strategies without having an opportunity to view the residence before it is razed.”
 

Jakubec has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of making and possessing destructive devices and robbing several banks.  He previously lived in San Marcos and in the Ramona Country Estates neighborhood in Ramona.

Photos released by the San Diego Sheriff's office reveal the cluttered interior of the home including a chilling array of explosives including home-made grenades and mines.  

Jakubec's wife, Marina, has claimed she was unaware of his activities, knowing only that his hobby was chemistry. Outside the courthouse last week, she insited that her husband is a "good man" and that she loves him.

More than 80 properties are included in the evacuation order for tomorrow’s burn, with some 60 more advised to shelter in place. The burn is slated to commence around 9 a.m., weather permitting. For more information, visit http://www.sdcountyemergency.com/.
