Witnesses told the CHP that a 2001 Volvo S40 and a 1999 VW Passat were racing each other at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour when the Passat lost control and flipped over. There were five people in the Passat and three in the Volvo, all returning from a bonfire at a beach in La Jolla.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased as Santee residents Anthony Foreman, 18, and Jaylie James Campbell, 16. They were each rear-seat passengers in the Passat and both were ejected from the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene, the Medical Examiner's Office reported. Anthony was a senior at El Capitan High School and Jaylie was a student at Santana High School.

The other two passengers, a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, sustained life threatening injuries while the driver, a 16-year-old boy suffered major internal injuries.  They were all taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital by ambulance.  They are also residents of Santee.  According to NBC739, one of those hospitalized victims from that same vehicle was pronounced brain dead Thursday morning and the CHP believes that victim was the girl in the car that crashed.

According to a CHP statement, the driver was evaluated but determined not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  He was driving with a provisional license and was in violation of the restrictions that prohibits teens that have been licensed for less than one year to drive a car without an adult between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., or carry more than one passenger according to the CHP.

The Volvo did not crash but did pull over after the crash to help.  The driver, Michael S. Jonson, 18, of Lakeside had two teenage passengers in the vehicle.  He was arrested and booked into jail on charges of suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of drugs and participating in a speed contest resulting in injury, according to the Union-Tribune.  He was released from jail Thursday afternoon on $50,000 bail.
