Press conference Monday before Mayor delivers budget

April 15, 2012 (San Diego) -- A diverse community and labor coalition will rally at San Diego City Hall on Monday to highlight the need for greater community involvement and equity in the city’s budget.

The Community Budget Alliance, which includes more than 30 local organizations, is calling for equitable spending among neglected neighborhoods, fair treatment of city workers and greater citizen input. The call comes as Mayor Jerry Sanders presents his budget proposal to the City Council Monday.

Jeanne Brown, president of the League of Women Voters of San Diego, said, "Community members should have input earlier, before the budget has already been developed and presented."

Following the press conference, alliance members will testify at the City Council's 2 p.m. meeting on the recommendations and values that should guide city budget-making.

Participating organizations include the League of Women Voters, NAACP San Diego branch, the Coalition of Neighborhood Councils, San Diego LGBT Pride, MAAC Project, Bayside Community Center, AFSCME Local 127, Equality Alliance, Center on Policy Initiatives, Mid-City CAN and many more.
