March 10, 2021 (Chula Vista) - Playing through intermittent rain and wet conditions, the San Diego State men’s golf team finished in 12th place at the Lamkin San Diego Classic Wednesday at historic San Diego Country Club. The Aztecs shot an 8-over-par 296 on the final day on the par-72, 7,033-yard course and 26-over 890 for the tournament.

Competing as an individual and not counting for SDSU’s team score, Youssef Guezzale was the team’s top finisher, tying for 17th out of 112 players at 3-over 213 after carding a 3-under 69 today. The 69 was tied for the third-lowest score in the third round and matched San Diego State’s low round for the tournament. Starting on the 10th hole, Guezzale sandwiched eight pars with a birdie in the middle on the par-5, 485-yard 14th hole. Guezzale also birdied the par-5, 513-yard second and the par-4, 401-yard fifth on his back nine to get to 3-under. A bogey on the par-3, 187-yard sixth stopped his momentum, but Guezzale rebounded with consecutive pars and finished in style with a birdie on the par-4, 427-yard ninth to sign for the 69.

Puwit Anupansuebsai and Steve Sugimoto were the Aztecs’ top-2 starters for the tournament, taking 22nd and tying for 23rd respectively. Anupansuebsai finished at 4-over 220 after carding an even-par 72 in today’s final round. Anupansuebsai, competing as SDSU’s No. 1 this week (and No. 2 today), opened with back-to-back birdies on the par-4, 368-yard first and the second. Although he bogeyed the sixth, Anupansuebsai came right back with a birdie on the par-4, 377-yard seventh and made the turn at 2-under 34. The reigning Mountain West Golfer of the Year, however, started out the back nine with consecutive bogeys before notching a birdie on No. 14 to get back to red numbers. A bogey on the par-4, 460-yard 18th put him back to even par for the round.

Sugimoto, who started the tournament No. 3 in San Diego State’s lineup, played with the No. 1s today en route to a 3-over 75, matching his score from Tuesday’s second round. Overall, he finished at 5-over 221. Sugimoto had a pair of birdies on the day - No. 2 and No. 12 (par-4, 390 yards) - but also five bogeys, before settling down with four straight pars to close out the round.

A pair of freshmen competing as individuals tied for 42nd at 7-over 223 in Jackson Moss and Liam Koeneke. Moss had a 3-over 75 today with birdies on the par-3, 158-yard 11th and the par-4, 397-yard 15th, while Koeneke shot a 5-over 77 with birdies on the par-4, 461-yard fourth and the 15th.

Other members of the Aztec starting five were Zihao Jin, who tied for 49th at 9-over 225 following a 4-over 76 today, Callum Bruce (T-55th at +10 (74 today)) and Joey Moore (T-69th at +13 (75 today)). Bruce led the way with three birdies on Wednesday, while Moore recorded two and Jin had one.

Other individuals in action for SDSU included Amadeo Figus in a tie for 69th at +13 (75 today), Quentin Hill in a tie for 92nd at +19 (72 today), Skyler Ngo in a tie for 99th at +22 (76 today) and Jack Heath in a tie for 108th at +26 (86 today).

San Diego State returns to action March 20-21 at the National Invitational Tournament at Omni National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
