March 26, 2022 (San Diego) - The Aztec track and field team wrapped up competition on Saturday at the 43rd Annual Aztec Invitational. The Aztecs had 11 podium finishers, four athletes set top 10 all-time marks in their events, and finished second overall.

The Aztecs got off to a flying start in the long jump competition to start the day. Simone Johnson took the long jump title with a leap of 19-11.75, beating out two PAC-12 athletes to the top step of the podium. That jump of 19-11.75 cracks the top 10 list all-time in the event at No. 9. Dejanae Thompson, Sara Absten, and Vanessa Spizewski all scored points as well, finishing in fourth, fifth and seventh respectively.

Jenna Fee Feyerabend earned a second victory of the day for the Aztecs, this time in the high jump. She cleared 5-09.25 good for sixth-best all-time in Aztec history, beating the next closest competitor by over two inches to take the title.

In the pole vault the Aztecs took the top two spots on the podium. Kaitlin Heri won the event with a vault of 13-09.75, a mark which puts her at No. 7 all-time in the event. Ashley Callahan and Corey Friedenbach tied for second with a cleared height of 13-03.75 to earn a combined 14 more points in the team race for the Aztecs.

Rounding out the field events, Simone Johnson finished her day with another podium finish, this time in the triple jump. Her mark of 40-01.25 was good enough for second place in the event.

Sakura Roberson continued her solid start to the outdoor season as well. She ran 53.91, a new PR in the 400m dash, and won the event to earn 10 points in the team race for the Aztecs.

Lauren Harper continued her upward trajectory across the distance record books for both indoors and outdoors on Saturday. She ran 4:28.17 in the 1500m run, which puts her at No. 6 all-time in the event, and was fast enough for fourth place on the day.

Also on the track, the Aztecs finished in second and third in the 3000m steeplechase as well. Natalie Regalado finished in second in 12:01.77 and Isabelle Davis finished in third in 12:21.39 to earn a combined 14 points for the Aztecs.

In the 100m hurdles Danae Dyer kicked off her outdoor season with a second-place finish in the event, running 13.45 and finished just 0.09 of a second behind the first-place finisher.

As for the relay races, SDSU had two 4x100m relay teams compete. The “A” team finished fourth in 46.02 and the “B” team finished in seventh in 47.15.

To cap off the meet the Aztecs had a team compete in the 4x400m relay, and they finished the meet in fantastic fashion. The Aztec 4x400m relay team won the event in a time of 3:37.43, beating the next closest competitor by almost five seconds.

Up Next: The Aztecs are back in action in two weeks at the Jim Click Shootout and Multi’s in Tucson, Ariz. and at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif.
