September 22, 2017 (San Diego) - Another “we wish the Padres would have ____” sentence starter for your next party: we wish the Padres would have had easy victories like they did last night all season. But we can’t change the past, no matter how much Jay Gatsby thinks you can. The Padres would try for another easy win tonight against Jon Gray for the Rockies. He’d be facing Jordan Lyles.
Tonight was low-scoring and the Rockies eventually got the upper hand. All the scoring was done in the fifth, starting with homers from Nolan Arenado and Ian Desmond. Lyles singled in the Padres’ half of the fifth to center to score Travis Jankowski, but the Rockies still led 2-1.
Trevor Story added insurance with a solo homer to the Western Supply building in the seventh to kick Lyles out of the game. Phil Maton came in and gave up a double to Desmond, who was driven home on a double from Jonathan Lucroy to extend the Rockies’ lead as they would snap their four-game losing streak and win 4-1 to even the series at one game apiece.
Tomorrow’s game three is earlier, at the usual 5:40 p.m. Saturday start. Chad Bettis starts for Colorado against Jhoulys Chacin.
