November 6, 2014 (San Diego) – Veteran Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi has been released from a Mexican prison, the State Department has announced. Tahmooressi was arrested and imprisoned for driving across the international border with three guns in his vehicle, which is illegal under Mexican law. He reportedly suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome and was not able to obtain treatment while imprisoned for over 200 days.
State Senator Joel Anderson (R-Alpine), who previously declined an invitation to a luncheon with Mexico’s president in protest of Tahmooressi’s arrest, issued a statement indicated he is pleased that Mexican authorities have released Sgt. Tahmooressi back to the United States.
“Releasing him so that he may receive the treatment he needs to combat his PTSD is a much more humane way of treating him than restraining him in shackles, standing for days,” Senator Anderson states. “My hopes and prayers are with Sgt. Tahmooressi and his family, and I wish him a prosperous life after his selfless defense of our country."
