February 13, 2015 (San Diego)--County officials and community partners kick off Love Your Heart Day to help residents take charge of their health by offering free blood pressure screenings throughout San Diego County on Friday, February 13. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for one of every four deaths. Obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and a family history of heart disease can put an individual at greater risk of dying.
As part of the County of San Diego’s Live Well San Diego initiative, as well as American Heart Health Month, the County wants everyone to love their heart, and know their numbers by getting their blood pressure checked. There are other steps people can take to prevent heart disease, among them:
Watch your weight
Quit smoking and stay away from second-hand smoke
Lower your cholesterol and sodium intake
If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation
Increase the amount of physical activity in your life
Manage stress
