August 9, 2017 (Cincinnati) - The Padres staged a great recovery win last night against the Reds. Two more games remained, including tonight’s with Travis Wood on the mound against Asher Wojciechowski, who is surprisingly an American from South Carolina.
Slowly but surely, the Reds made Wood’s life a nightmare early. In the first, Joey Votto hit a double off the wall and Wood walked Adam Duvall and Eugenio Suarez in the first. Jose Peraza came to the bat and did the honors with a two-out blooping single to center to score two and the Reds jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Suarez doubled that lead in the third with a two-run blast to make it 4-0.
Two more came in the fifth on another two-run homer by Stuart Turner, his first as a big leaguer.
It was probably too little, too late, but Manuel Margot took away Wojciechowski’s shutout with a solo homer in the sixth to put the Padres on the board and giving him 10 home runs on the season. Wil Myers added two with a two-run shot of his own to right field. The Padres cut the lead in half, but the Reds still led 6-3.
But the Reds pulled away again in their half of the sixth when Billy Hamilton scored from third on a fielders’ choice. Peraza had another productive at-bat, hitting a single for his third RBI of the night. Votto scored from second and the Reds increased their lead by two to take game three with an 8-3 win.
Stream tomorrow’s finale at work because it’s at 9:35 a.m. The Padres will go for the split with Dinelson Lamet on the mound against Luis Castillo for the Reds.
