October 24, 2021 (Malibu) - The San Diego State men’s tennis team wrapped up competition on Sunday at the 2021 edition of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on the Pepperdine University campus.
The Aztec doubles tandem of Victor Castro and Joe Tyler were thwarted in their quest for glory in the main draw, falling to the third-seeded USC duo of Stefan Dostanic and Samuel Rubell by an 8-6 count in the semifinals.
In consolation singles action, Alexander Mändma recorded a pair of victories over the weekend, defeating Cal Poly’s Colter Smith in nail-biting fashion, 7-5, 7-6(1), before outlasting Pepperdine’s Corrado Summaria in a super-tiebreaker, 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 in the round of 16. However, the SDSU freshman could not sustain the momentum in the quarterfinals, where he dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to San Diego’s Marvin Schaber.
Earlier in the bracket, Roni Rikkonen experienced a 6-1, 6-2 setback at the hands of Pepperdine’s 25th-seeded Eric Hadigian, while Alex Scemanenco was edged by UC Irvine’s Matthew Sah in another super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.
San Diego State puts the finishing touches on its fall schedule in two weeks when it travels across town for the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic, Nov. 5-7, on the campus of USD.
