April 10, 2024 (Julian) – For Julian residents, preserving the dark sky is a way of life. Designated as an International Dark Sky Community in 2021, Julian is part of the mere 1% of the U.S. where the Milky Way remains visible.

The mountain town’s mission recently faced a challenge when the brightness of fourteen newly installed streetlights exceeded dark sky community standards — prompting the Julian Dark Sky Network to seek assistance from my office.

Upon receiving their request, my team and I swiftly mobilized and collaborated with San Diego Gas & Electric.

I am pleased to report that through our coordinated efforts, the luminosity of the streetlights was effectively reduced from 6200 lumens to 4000 lumens in compliance with dark sky community standards.

"Local residents confirmed to us they saw a significant beneficial change and were quite happy," remarked Doug Sollosy, founder of the Julian Dark Sky Network. "This change was unquestionably beneficial to the quality of life of the residents of the Historic District."

As your County Supervisor, I remain dedicated to addressing challenges and finding solutions that enhance the well-being of our communities. If you ever encounter issues or have concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to my office.

We are here to make County government work for you!
