April 25, 2016 (Campo) – If you’ve never visited the backcountry, here’s an event that’s fun for the whole family.  The Camp Lockett Event and Equestrian Facility (799 Forrest Gate Rd., Campo) will host the 10th annual Campo Roundup on Saturday, May 7th.

Witness how cowboys ride, rope and brand cattle in the Ranch Branding Competition. Watch or participate in the Gene Martinez Memorial Horseshoe Tournament and try your luck at winning the trophy. An all day Gymkhana for kids and adults will also take place and winners will be rewarded with buckles and ribbons. (You can sign up at the event.) Gunfight skits will be hosted by The Hole in the wall Gang with special guests The Gaskills, who will reenact the famous Campo Gunfight of 1875.

The gates open at 7 a.m. with opening ceremonies starting at 9:30 a.m. including color guard and presentation of this year’s Grand Marshal.

Activities also include kids’ games, the Miss Roundup Pageant and a raffle. There will be relay races, three legged races, tug-of-war, roping, and a hula hoop contest, to name a few! These will be held throughout the day during the hours of 10 am to 2 pm.

Toward the end of the Roundup is the Stick Horse Race, a fun family activity where kids, teens, adults and seniors alike don stick horses (bring your own or borrow one of ours) and have an old fashioned stick horse race! Everyone has a great time and everyone gets an opportunity to race. There are no awards for winners, just the knowledge that you beat your opponent.

The highlight of the day is always the Mutton Busting event for kids under 50 lbs., who ride using protective gear atop a sheep. The one who stays on the longest is the winner of the buckle. All other entrants receive awards for participating.

Organizers encourage everyone to come on out to Campo and enjoy the fresh air and open spaces at the 10th Annual Campo Roundup. Period costumes are welcomed.

Admission: $5 for adults and children age 6 and over.
