June 18, 2010 (San Diego) – Two-year-old Jovani Louangxaysongxham was killed this morning after running out in front of a trash truck, the San Diego Coroner's office confirms.  The child’s mother was assisting an older sibling into a vehicle when the two-year-old spotted his father across the street from the family’s home at 1100 South 43rd Street and ran into the roadway. He was struck by an Allied Waste Service trash truck and became trapped beneath the vehicle.

According to San Diego Police, a passenger saw the child and warned the driver of the truck.  The driver tried to avoid the child, but was unable to brake in time to avoid hitting the toddler. Police and paramedics arrived within minutes after 911 calls were made, but were unable to save the child, who was one month shy of his third birthday.

The boy’s father and uncle assaulted the truck’s driver and a police officer, according to police. The uncle hit the officer, knocking him unconscious briefly. The uncle was arrested. SDPD’s traffic division and Southeastern division are investigating the tragedy.
