December 23, 2013 (Alpine) – The Sheriff seeks tips to identify a caller who reported late this morning that he had shot a friend and his friend’s father, tossed a grenade, and planted bombs around a residence. The caller also claimed he planned to shoot it out with deputies.

Patrol units from Alpine, Lakeside, and Santee responded to the site at Alpine Village Apartments on Calle Conejo in Alpine shortly before noon today, along with a canine unit and ASTREA helicopter.  Upon investigation, deputies believe the call may be a prank known as a “SWATing” incident, in which the caller’s phone number is masked and a call is made to law enforcement claiming an assault or shooting in an effort to draw SWAT officers to a scene, said Sgt. Shimmin with the Alpine Sheriff’s station.

No one was injured  and an investigation is continuing.  If you have information about this case, you can call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line at (858)565-5200. You can remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest by calling Crime Stoppers at (888)580-8477.
