March 9, 2014 (Alpine) – Leland Ernest Clyde, 73, has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the shooting death of Jock Gregory Martin, 56 at the Ma Tar Awa Campground in Alpine.  The two men, who were neighbors, reportedly had an argument during which Clyde shot and killed Martin with a shotgun, the Sheriff reports.

Clyde retrieved more ammunition from his trailer and pointed the gun next at Martin’s brother, who came outside after hearing shots. The brother ran and called for help.

A Sheriff’s ASTREA helicopter arrived and ordered Clyde to the ground.  Patrol deputies pronounced Martin dead at the scene and Clyde was taken into custody.

The Sheriff's Homicide Detail, Crime Laboratory personnel, and detectives from the Alpine Sheriff's Substation are conducting the investigation.

This marks the second violent death in Alpine today, following the earlier grisly discovery of a burned body on a rural trail in an apparently unrelated incident.
