September 18, 2015 (San Diego)—Aiming to help families and individuals sharing housing, San Diego’s City Council has unanimously passed an amendment to the Rooming House Ordinance proposed by Councilmember Marti Emerald.

The ordinance was originally passed in 2008 to help Code Enforcement crack down on nuisances created by overcrowded rental housing in the College Area near San Diego State University, a response to residents’ complaints.

The amendment passed combines two definitions of a rooming house in the San Diego Municipal Code into one.

According to Emerald, this makes clear that “The intent of this ordinance is not to limit shared housing for individuals and families trying to afford to live in San Diego, but is really intended to address the overcrowded housing issues related to students in the College Area.”
