March 3, 2014 (San Diego)--Apple picking is a trend nationwide – no, we’re not talking about plucking fruit. Thieves have been stealing Apple iPhones, which are costly to buy and hold their resale value.

There has been a rash of iPhone thefts at  San Diego State University, prompting numerous alerts recently.

SDSU Police Captain Joshua Mays says that the best way to avoid becoming a victim is to walk in well-lit areas and keep your iphone out of sight.

If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, don’t hesitate to call the police on one of the blue emergency phones on campus.

“If you see someone who is approaching you and you feel uncomfortable about it, stand up straight and look them in the eye or say something to them,” Captain Mays advises.  He says thieves won’t usually go after people who act like that because now you know what they look like.”

Although robberies are on the increase on campus, so are arrest rates. There have been numerous cases in the past year where an arrest was made based on a tip from someone who saw the crime alerts sent to students.

The average college student is carrying around approximately $2,000 worth of technology, so it’s important for students to keep a close eye on computers and other equipment and take precautions to protect yourself.

You can stay informed about campus crime alerts, parking and traffic and important safety announcements at the SDSU Police Department website.
