Cross-dressing suspect accused of robbing banks in El Cajon and San Diego

February 4, 2011 (San Diego) -- San Diego Police Department Robbery Unit detectives, in cooperation with investigators from the El Cajon Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, have arrested Robert Dion Tyndall II for a series of bank robberies that began last summer in El Cajon.

On July 16, 2010, the suspect contacted the manager of the Inland Federal Credit Union, in the City of El Cajon, as he was opening the bank. The suspect simulated a weapon and demanded cash. The manager opened the vault and placed a large quantity of cash in a bag provided by the suspect. The bank manager believed the suspect was possibly a white male dressed as a woman.

On January 24, 2011, a white male approached the manager of the Comerica Bank, located at 3361 Rosecrans Street, in the parking prior to the bank opening. The suspect told the manager he had a gun and demanded to enter the bank. The manager refused to open the bank and the suspect drove away in a tan or gold pick-up truck.

On February 1, 2011, a white male used a gun to rob the Torrey Pines Bank at 9280 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. The suspect displayed a handgun and ordered all occupants of the bank to gather in the lobby. He directed a bank employee to fill a bag with cash. The suspect ordered the bank employees to wait three minutes before calling the police. The suspect drove away in a tan full-sized pick-up truck.

Investigators from the San Diego Police Department, El Cajon Police Department and FBI identified Robert Deon Tyndall, II (09-17-54) as the suspect responsible for these robberies and the attempt robbery. Investigators served a search warrant at Tyndall’s Hillcrest residence today. Loss from the robberies and the pick-up truck used in two of the cases were recovered from the residence.

Tyndall was arrested without incident and was charged with two counts of 2nd degree commercial robbery and one count of attempt commercial robbery. He will be arraigned on February 8, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. in San Diego Federal Court.
