SAN DIEGO, CA July 23, 2010 Meet author Gary Winters, of The Deer Dancer, Friday evening as he gives a presentation and signing for his powerful novel, The Deer Dancer, at Borders Books and Music in El Cajon. The author will speak briefly about the process of writing this novel, read from his book, and take questions. This is part of an ongoing commitment between the El Cajon Borders and local publisher, Sunbelt Books, to provide East County with local author readings to encourage literacy and a sense of community.

The Deer Dancer, a mature young adult novel, is a contemporary coming-of-age story about a Yaqui Indian boy set in Mexico. Juan Araiza has no money, no shoes, no education, and no future. He leaves his village to search for his father—a man he never knew—in Mexico’s second largest city. Juan doesn’t find his father, but his native wit and grit take him all the way from the streets to a job in the federal government. He meets the charismatic Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos and soon finds himself feeling torn, his head in the government job and his heart in the black-masked Zapatista fight for Indian rights.

Author Gary Winters has written a hundred cross-cultural articles on Mexico. He has won awards for short story, poetry, novel, and photojournalism (The Deer Dancer recently won Best Novel in the national Mensa Creative Urge Awards). As the English editor, feature writer, and columnist for a bilingual newspaper in Baja California, he was severely censured by immigration officials when he championed Mexican union workers and muchachos selling chicle on the streets of San Felipe; he has since transitioned into fiction.

For those who can’t make it to the El Cajon event, Winters will also appear at the Borders in National City on July 31 at 1 pm. Call Sunbelt or visit www.sunbeltbooks.com for more info. Both events are FREE and open to the public.

Linda Loegel's "Bumps Along the Way" at Borders

In another series of presentations and book signings at Borders in El Cajon, tomorrow, December 7th, Linda Loegel will have a presentation and book signing at the store. Linda will read from her book, "Bumps Along the Way," a book for people who like to travel, who are old enough to remember back When, and for people who believe that God watches out for us no matter what dumb things we humans may do. Later in the month, Cheri Seymour, Joshua Graham and Iolanda Scripca, will have presentations and book signings there.

Bumps Along the Way

Thank you, Dennis. The book signing on December 7th will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Borders booksore in El Cajon, across from Parkway Plaza. I will have my book for sale as well as a calendar that was printed in conjunction with the book--every month has a different picture of the places we visited. Come on over, I'd love to meet you!
