March 11, 2017 (Fullerton) - The San Diego State softball team swept a pair of games in convincing fashion Saturday at the Louisville Slugger Invitational at Cal State Fullerton. The Aztecs (15-9) defeated Eastern Michigan, 10-0, in five innings and then knocked off Longwood, 5-1.

Over the two games, SDSU outscored its opponents, 15-1, while outhitting them, 21-8. San Diego State also did not have an error, while its opponents combined for six.

In the opener, Aztec junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) led off the game with a home run and SDSU never looked back in a 10-0, run-rule win over the Eagles (8-9). San Diego State scored three times in the top of the first inning, twice in the second, three more times in the third and two in the fifth to secure its fourth run-rule victory of the year.

The Aztecs outhit EMU, 12-5, for the game and took advantage of five Eastern Michigan errors.

Senior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had two doubles, three RBIs and two runs to pace the SDSU offense, while Peres had the two hits, RBI on a solo homer and three runs. Sophomore Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) added a two-run home run with a single and two runs, and junior Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) chipped in with two hits and two runs. Freshman Sami Aguilar (Orangevale, Calif.) also added her first career hit and walk.

The offense was plenty for sophomore pitcher Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif.). The right-hander tossed four scoreless innings, surrendering just five hits, all singles, to improve to 2-2 on the year. Junior Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) relieved McDonald and struck out two batters in a perfect fifth inning.

In the second game, San Diego State spotted the Lancers (7-12) an unearned run top of the fifth before scoring the final five runs in a 5-1 victory.

The Aztecs tied it in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Shelby Thompson (Benicia, Calif.) singled, stole second and scored on an error after a single by redshirt freshman Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.).

After stranding a LU runner in scoring positon in the top of the sixth, SDSU broke the 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom half of the frame on five hits. Meshack led off with a single, moved to third on a Cable single and scored on a fielder’s choice RBI by Sturdivant. Freshman Megan Smith (Valencia, Calif.) later plated Cable on a pinch-hit single, followed by a single by Thompson to score freshman Kristen Parker (Mira Mesa, Calif./Mira Mesa HS). After Longwood changed pitchers, San Diego State senior Ashley Ercolano (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) made it three consecutive RBI singles for the Aztecs when her hit scored Smith from third.

SDSU outhit the Lancers, 9-3, in the contest. Thompson was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI, run and fifth stolen base of the season, while Cable had two hits and a run scored.

Formby (3-2) picked up where she left off after tossing a perfect fifth inning in San Diego State’s opening game by tossing a complete game. The right-hander gave up just one unearned run on three hits and a walk, while striking out two.

The Aztecs wrap up their stretch of six games in four days and seven games in five days at 12:30 p.m. PT Sunday vs. Harvard. The game between SDSU and the Crimson will be played at Long Beach State.
