SDSU took the top three spots in two individual events

April 1, 2017 (San Diego) - Thanks to its wins in seven individual events and an overall strong team performance, San Diego State track & field won the California Collegiate Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, Saturday in La Jolla. 

The Aztecs collected 157 points, 36.5 points more than their next closer competitor, the host Tritons.

The Scarlet and Black went 1-2-3 in the 400 meters, led by freshman Andrenette Knight. The Morant Bay, Jamaica native crossed the finish line in a collegiate-best 54.47. Junior Simone Glenn took silver with a 54.69 time while senior Tyra Lea was third, recording a 55.68 mark. Sophomore Lakin Hatcher (56.61) placed fifth, while junior Jasmine Young raced to the best time of her collegiate career (59.80).

San Diego State also secured the top three spots in the pole vault, led by junior Bonnie Draxler’s 14-00.00 mark. That mark leads the Mountain West this season, and is just the second time in her collegiate career she has vaulted over 14 feet. Meanwhile, sophomore Marissa Berry’s collegiate-record 13-08.25 was good for second. Freshman Rachel Craft also recorded a collegiate best with her 12-02.50 vault to secure bronze. Sophomore Sara Curran placed fifth (11-08.50). Freshman Taylor Alexander (collegiate-best 11-02.50) and senior Katherine Magill (10-08.75) also competed.

In the 100, SDSU took the top two spots, paced by senior Micha Auzenne’s 11.67 time for the second 100-meter dash win of her Aztec career. Senior Starlynn Singleton placed second (11.86), while sophomore Sierra Brabham-Lawrence was fifth (12.27).

Brabham-Lawrence also won the 100-meter hurdles for the third time the season, clocking in at 13.76.

The long jump saw sophomore Lisa-Anne Barrow leap to a collegiate best 19-10.25 for her second win in the event this year. Singleton was fourth (19-00.50), and Moreland finished eighth (17-09.50).

Junior transfer Melody Harris recorded a 148-08.75-inch throw in the javelin for the event win and the fifth longest mark in program history.

In the discus throw, senior Rachel Alesi won the event for the second time this season with a 165-01 mark. Sophomore Anushi Desai placed fourth, throwing for 149-02.

Senior Freja Liljedahl threw for a season-long 168-08 in the hammer throw to take second.

The 3,000-meter steeplechase yielded senior Elaine Ribeiro’s third-place 11:06.66 time.

The Aztecs are off next weekend before heading to Azusa, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Relays, the California Invitational and the Bryan Clay Invitational Thursday, April 13 through Saturday, April 15.
