February 25, 2017 (Cathedral City, Calif.) - The San Diego State softball team rallied three times from one-run deficits to down Stanford, 5-4, Saturday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

The Aztecs’ (6-5) decisive comeback came in the bottom of the seventh when junior Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) led off with a solo home run over the right field wall to tie the game at 4-4. After a foulout, freshman Shelby Thompson (Benicia, Calif.) singled and moved to third on a double by senior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif.). Senior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) followed with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to plate Thompson with the walk-off win for SDSU.

The Cardinal (9-5) struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Bessie Noll to score Kylie Sorenson.

San Diego State responded in the fourth when Ignacio scored on an error.

Noll’s infield single in the fifth scored Teaghan Cowles to but Stanford back on top.

The Aztecs answered in the bottom half of the fifth as sophomore pinch runner Aris Metcalfe (Compton, Calif.) scored on another Cardinal miscue.

SDSU took its first lead in the sixth when redshirt freshman Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.) singled, moved to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) then ripped a long sacrifice fly to put San Diego State up, 3-2.

Stanford, however, had three straight runners reach base to lead off the seventh, starting with a double and walk. After a wild pitch, Whitney Burks ripped a single to right-center field to plate two runners and put the Cardinal back on top at 4-3.

Freshman pitcher Marissa Moreno (Torrance, Calif.) was able to come in and get the Aztecs out of the jam, giving SDSU one more chance in the bottom of the seventh, setting up the previously mention heroics.

San Diego State continued to swing the hot bats with 11 hits, but left a season-high 11 runners on base.

Ignacio (2-for-3, R, 2B, BB), Thompson (2-for-3, R, BB) and Wright (2-for-4, R) had two hits apiece to pace the Aztec offense. Peres also singled, had an RBI and a walk.

Senior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) got the win for SDSU after allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk over six innings, while striking out three. Sophomore Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) was unable to get an out, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk, before Moreno (2-1) picked up the win after tossing a scoreless inning with one hit and one walk allowed, while striking out one.
