March 19, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State women’s tennis captured a 4-3 win in Tuesday’s dual match against Yale. The Aztecs claimed the doubles decision and clinched the dual with three of the first five singles wins, while one match remained.
San Diego State claimed the doubles points with wins on courts two and one, where junior Mia Smith and sophomore Abbie Mulbarger topped Caroline Dunleavy and Raissa Lou 6-1, while sophomore Nnena Nadozie and freshman Alicia Melosch clinched the doubles point for the Aztecs in a 7-6 (1) decision over Samantha Martinelli and Jessie Gong in the top seed.
In singles action, freshman Agustina Rimoldi Godoy snagged the first point in solo play, finishing 6-3, 6-1 over Yale’s Kathy Wang on court six. Khatamova came from behind in her second set to edge out Dunleavy 6-2, 7-5 on court two, but the Bulldogs answered with their first point of the match on court four, where Gong topped Melosch 6-4, 6-4, to put the overall score at 3-1 Aztecs.
On court No. 1, Smith was taken to a third set where she ultimately dropped a 6-4, 1-6, 2-6 decision to Martinelli, but Mulbarger came through with the dual clincher with her 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Amy Yang on court five. Having just finished their second set, Nadzoie and Lou played out a 10-point tie break on court three, where Nadozie fell 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-4.
THE NOTE
With today’s match decision, Abbie Mulbarger puts up a team-best fourth straight win, improving to 10-4 in singles play this season.
