October 9, 2015 (Ramona)--Bald tires are being blamed for a collision in which a Mercedes Benz sedan struck a county van that was transporting five senior citizens for the Ramona Senior Center.

The Ramona Sentinel reports that a 19-year-old woman from Ramona was driving the Mercedes when she lost traction on a rain-slicked roadway on Vista Ramona.  She crossed into another lane and struck the left front of the van, then spun around and struck the rear of the van.

California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said the tires on the Mercedes were “completely bald” and urged motorists to get their tires inspected with a wet winter expected due to El Niño conditions.

Both drivers were transported to area hospitals with head pain and other injuries. Passengers in the van, including a 99-year-old, were treated for injuries and transferred to another vehicle, according to Cal-Fire. Fortunately, all were wearing seatbelts.
