May 2, 2015 (Baltimore) – Six Baltimore police officers are under arrest, facing charges ranging from manslaughter to murder for the death of Freddie Gray,  a 25-year-old African American man.  Gray’s death of a spinal cord injury while in custody sparked riots in Baltimore and other cities.

Maryland’s Attorney General  Marilyn Mosby found Gray’s arrest was illegal, since officers had no probable cause. He was then shackled but left unrestrained in the back of a police van.  Despite multiple stops when officers checked on Gray and another prisoner, they still failed to restrain him and also ignored his pleas for medical help, even when he said he could not breathe.

Mosby, 35, is the youngest top prosecutor in any major U.S. City. An African –American woman, she comes from a family of law enforcement officers but has previously called police brutality “inexcusable.”  She has also felt the pain of loss and senseless violence; her 17-year-old cousin was mistaken for a drug dealer and killed by another teenager.

Baltimore’s Mayor Stephanie Rawlins-Blake said of the arrests, “No one in our city is above the law.”
