August 14, 2012 (Sacramento) —Assemblymember Marty Block (AD-78) today introduced Assembly Joint Resolution 46 urging the President and Congress to adopt an alternative spending plan to sequestration – automatic federal budget cuts of $1.2 trillion over 10 years scheduled to begin January 2013 because Congress has not achieved its budget targets.

“This measure is a plea to Congress for reason before it places the federal budget on automatic pilot, causing additional economic uncertainty and job loss in the San Diego region and across the nation,” Block said. “Congress would strike another body blow to our economic recovery if it allows sequestration to occur.”

“If Congress fails to adopt an alternative spending plan, the San Diego region could lose as many as 31,000 jobs,” Block said. “The military is a cornerstone of our local economy and accounts for more than 25 percent of San Diego’s entire economy.” The sequestration would occur over 10 years and amount to $500 billion in cuts to the United States Department of Defense. Additional cuts to domestic programs are also scheduled.

Block said the federal cuts and job losses would have long-range effects, including decreased consumer spending due to economic uncertainty and loss of research and development investment in the region. One example of federal investment in a local technology firm is Malin Space Science Systems. Malin developed the cameras for the NASA Mars mission spacecraft Curiosity and has worked with NASA for more than a decade.

President Barack Obama today signed a law requiring him to report where he would make $110 billion in required cuts. Under the just approved law, Obama must report his proposed reductions by Sept. 6.

Joining Block in authoring AJR 46 are Senator Juan Vargas (SD-40), Assemblymembers Toni Atkins (AD-76) and Ben Hueso (AD-79).
Assemblymember Marty Block represents the cities and communities of Bonita, Chula Vista, Lemon Grove, San Diego and Spring Valley.
