February 18, 2019 (Ramona) – A man found dead after a house fire Feb. 16 at 20997 Black Canyon Road in Ramona is believed to have shot himself, according to Lieutenant Ken Jones with the San Diego County Sheriff.

Ramona deputies responded to assist Cal Fire at 5:20 p.m.  A witness reported hearing a possible gunshot.

While other occupants of the home were safe, the man could not be located after the fire, which Cal Fire extinguished, preventing spread to other structures.

“Due to the diminished structural integrity of the residence and low light conditions, the Bomb/Arson Unit advised they would respond back to the scene to conduct their investigation the following morning. A deputy was posted at the residence for scene security until the investigation could be continued,” Jones says.

The next morning around 8:45 a.m., a man’s body was found on the property about 50 yards away from the residence. Authorities believe he suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, however the Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death and confirm the man’s identity.

An investigation into the matter is continuing.
