BRUSH FIRES LOCALLY AND ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

May 3, 2013 (San Diego) -- according to the California Highway Patrol CAD system, there is a small vegetation fire on State Route 94 at Kelton. The Offramp has been shut down by the CHP. A brush fire is also reported in Valley Center at Lilac and Sierra Rojo.

Major fires are burning elsewhere in Southern California, always a concern as resources are spread thin to battle multiple blazes amid high-fire danger conditions region-wide.

The Summit Fire in Riverside County is reported by Cal Fire at 65% contained as of six thirty this morning.  It has destroyed one structure per Cal Fire and evacuations remain in place.

CHP CAD also reports a brush fire on 15N and Rancho California in Temecula. Depending on the size of the fire (it's just reported) smoke might be visible from North County communities, especially close to the border such as Pala and Warner Springs.

As of this morning the Spring Fire crested a hill and reached the Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu. Containment was reported at 10% but due to weather and fire conditions it's expected to drop. Containment means putting lines around a fire, that it has not jumped.  Evacuations remain in place. It has damaged fifteen structures, but has not destroyed any, per Cal Fire.

San Diego fire fighters are present at both Banning and Spring Fires.

Additionally, a fire in the Newbury Park area of the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles had reached 8,000 acres as of last night.
