December 16, 2017 (Dulzura) – Smoke inhalation and burns were the causes of death for Cal Fire engineer Cory Iverson, 32, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s report. The Dulzura-based firefighter and resident of Escondido died in the Fillmore, California area while battling the Thomas Fire.

A funeral process set for Sunday will begin at 10 a.m. in Ventura and travel through multiple counties down Interstate 15 to a mortuary in Miramar.

A memorial for Iverson will be held at The Rock Church in Point Loma on Saturday, December 23rd at 10 a.m.

A GoFundMe page set up to help his family has raised nearly $300,000.  Iverson’s wife, Ashley, is pregnant with the couple’s second child; he also leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter.

The GoFundMe site calls Iverson “a true hero to our Southern California community.”

Governor Brown earlier ordered flags at the state capitol flown at half-mast in Iverson’s honor.
