September 25, 2010 (La Mesa) – World War I had recently ended and the Roaring ‘20s were just getting started when Grossmont High School first broke ground 90 years ago. Now the oldest high school in East County is joining with communities of El Cajon and La Mesa, former staff and alumni in a 90th anniversary celebration and reunion on Saturday, September 25th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alumni from all classes are invited to attend and share their Grossmont Foothiller memories.

Visit the new Grossmont Museum, hear the Red Robe Choir and Royal Blue Regiment, enjoy historical talks, displays, and achievements of 2010 “Hall of Honor” inductees (Colonel Ed Fletcher, Coach Jack Mashin, and GHS astronauts Ellen Ochoa and Rick Sturckow),. In addition, a cornerstone time capsule that was sealed in place back in 1922 will be opened.

Grossmont is changing, as all things do...this will be your last chance to visit the campus as you remember it. View the new and exciting changes that will usher Grossmont into the next 100 years of educational excellence, shaping the youth of today....into the leaders of tomorrow.

The 90th Celebration & Reunion is a fundraising event for the Grossmont Educational Foundation, the Grossmont Alumni Association, and the GHS Museum. Proceeds go to further the needs of the students and the faculty of GHS. Cost is $8 for lunch and $15 for a commemorative T-shirt. On Wednesday September 25th, during the 90th Anniversary Celebration, a historical presentation will begin with the 1920's and cover subsequent decades.

On Saturday, August 28th, there will be a special presentation from the La Mesa Historical Society regarding the very beginnings and creation of the Grossmont Union High School District and the construction of Grossmont, which was finished in 1922. It will be held in the Library starting at 10:00 am. The GHS Museum will be open for tours after the presentation from 11-12.

Alumni are also invited to a football game on Friday September 24th between Grossmont and Santa Fe Christian at 7:00pm, as well as a free barbecue for all alumni before the game.

Adam Bovie, band director, issues this invitation to all alumni of the band: “As the current director, I would like to give you the opportunity to re-join the Royal Blue Regiment on September 25th for a special musical performance of alumni and current students together at 1 PM on the football field. Alumni of any year are welcome to attend, and we sincerely hope that all generations of alumni will participate with their musical peers in what we hope will be a powerful performance  for your fellow alumni, current students and the community at large. I am pleased to offer the use of larger instruments on a first-come availability basis to alumni who attend. Even if you play a smaller instrument, if you are thinking of attending but don't have an instrument please contact us through webmaster@ghsmusic.org or abovie@guhsd.net (619-668-6181) and we will find a way to "make it happen!”

Music such as The Star Spangled Banner and Grossmont's Fight Song will be provided in advance through the website and / or postal mail, and a rehearsal will be held on Thursday, September 23rd at the GHS band room for those who wish to participate, he added.
