September 30, 2019 (La Mesa) – Surf Rider Pizza Co. in La Mesa is among four restaurants that Cohn Restaurant Group will be temporarily taking over. Those four restaurants were managed by Patio Marketplace, an entity of Gina Champion-Cain.

Champion-Cain and ANI, a company that she operated, face federal securities fraud charges and a lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, as ECM reported.

10 News, an ECM news partner, reports that a court receiver has agreed to allow Cohn to take over Surf Rider pizza restaurants La Mesa and Ocean Beach locations short-term, as well as the Patio in Pacific Beach and Saska’s in Mission Beach. Cohn, one of San Diego’s premier restaurant operators, owns around 28 restaurants including the Bo-Beau restaurant across the street from Surf Rider in La Mesa.

The La Mesa pizzeria with surf-themed motif also has a bakery as well as indoor and outdoor full bars.

La Casa del Zorro Resort in Borrego Springs, also managed by Patio Marketplace, will also remain open and be unaffected by the court actions.

Nearly a dozen other restaurants that were owned by Champion-Cain are slated to close, or have already shut down, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
