July 15, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) - Perhaps not surprising in a city known for hosting ComiCon, San Diego State University’s Comic Arts Collection is one of the fastest growing academic comic collections on the west coast, SDSU’s news center reports.

The colorful collection includes over 20,000 comics, from popular protagonists to counterculture comedy spanning the 1930s to the present. Librarian Pamela Jackson says comics tackle “every subject and they really reflect societal and political views of the time, so when you trace the history of comics, you really get a feel for what was happening at the time.”

The comic collection does more than entertain students. It also serves as a haven for academic research and science fiction scholars.

The collection includes vintage, rare and valuable comics. Now SDSU’s Comic Arts Committee hopes to create a space within the library to house the collection, much of which is now in archives, and add a publicly browsable database to make these comic treasures easily accessible for students, professors and researchers.

Comic fans wishing to be super-heroes for the university’s effort can donate to the Comic Arts Committee. (Visit the Comic Arts Fund website for details).
