August 2, 2010 (La Mesa) -- The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St., La Mesa, will host a free senior discussion group on the Part D Medicare and the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA). The event will feature a presentation by Jean Soderberg, community education outreach specialist with the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25. The public is invited to attend this free event.

HICAP is a statewide program administered by the California Department of Aging and supported by California Health Advocates, a non-profit Medicare advocacy and education organization. HICAP is a volunteer-supported program that offers free Medicare counseling on such topics as how to appeal denials of coverage, Medigap policies, Medicare Advantage plans, employee and retiree coverage and long-term care insurance. Handouts will be provided and healthy refreshments will be served, according to Kathy Quinn, library director.

The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is a public library specializing in health research information. It is operated by the Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County.
