New School to Serve Up to 40 Children

July 13, 2010 (Spring Valley) The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) opened a 2,500 square-foot new preschool in Spring Valley in late June that will serve up to 40 children.

“The County of San Diego always strives to make a positive impact on the lives of its residents, especially children,” said Supervisor Dianne Jacob, County of San Diego Board of Supervisors, during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“The new preschool here in Spring Valley will help change the lives of area children for years to come,” added Jacob, who was joined by DPR Director Brian Albright and several children and parents.

The preschool and its fenced, outdoor play area are an expansion of the Spring Valley Community Center. As part of the project, the Community Center was also remodeled and will include a computer learning center with eight computers for public use. Additionally, the project includes a solar panel system to serve the entire facility to reduce energy costs.

The extension and remodel cost about $1.9 million and was funded by federal and state grants and County money. The preschool was built to state-licensed standards and the County is currently seeking licensed providers to operate the new facility.

“We listened to the community and this addition to the Community Center is the result.” Albright told the crowd. “The expanded Community Center will greatly improve opportunities for Spring Valley children.”

The Spring Valley Community Center provides an array of programs and services for area residents including recreation activities, senior programs, computer access, summer camp, and preschool classes.

The County Department of Parks and Recreation operates five centers to serve the unique needs of the unincorporated areas of the county.
