November 16, 2015 (San Diego) - The enrollment period is now open for Covered California, which aims to sign up 450,000 new enrollees by the end of January, when the third open enrollment season ends.
This time, Covered California is reaching out to the public with an ad campaign in multiple languages and a bus tour, seeking to find more people who are uninsured.
Currently about 2.2 million people in California who are eligible for a subsidized plan or Medi-Cal lack insurance, though that’s a big improvement from two years ago, when the number was 5 million.
Those who fail to get any insurance now face penalties under federal law.
But the best reason to get coverage is to assure protection when you need it most.
The “spotlight on coverage” tour points out the need for coverage for the unexpected, noting that Covered California patients have used their benefits to cover hip replacements, organ transplants, heart surgeries, cancer treatments and other major procedures.
