April 18, 2015 (Sacramento)—First came craft beer, a booming business in California. Could craft cannabis be next?
It could happen. The “California Craft Cannabis Act,” would legalize marijuana use statewide and establish a California Cannabis Commission responsible for setting up licensing requirements for craft growers, commercial growers, retailers and processors. It was submitted by attorneys Omar Figueroa and Heather Burke. The measure would also allow substantial taxation, up to 30 percent.
Another proposed ballot measure, Californians for Compassionate and Sensible Access, would override local restrictions on medical marijuana.
If California moves to legalize recreational marijuana, it will follow in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington state, where recreational marijuana is already legal. The District of Columbia has also legalized marijuana, but only for home use, not in public places.
Marijuana remains illegal under federal law and remains classified as a schedule 1 drug, though the Obama administration has backed off on enforcement in states that have legalized cannabis.
