April 15, 2017 (San Diego's East County) --This week’s Destination East County includes the opening of Cajon Classic Cruises this season, an antiques and crafts fair in Flinn Springs, a Victorian tea in Alpine,  and a Magic in the Mountains event in Ramona benefitting our own nonprofit  media and wildfire alerts.

Plus we’ll have previews of coming attractions including a Spring Garden Festival, Lakeside Western Days Parade, an Arbor Day Celebration, the Coyote Music Festival and many others.

 THIS WEEK'S MAJOR EVENTS

MAGIC IN THE MOUNTAIN:  ECM BENEFIT AT VINEYARD GRANT JAMES

East County Magazine will host “Magic in the Mountain,” a benefit for our nonprofit media outlet and wildfire alert service on Saturday, April 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Vineyard Grant James in Ramona.  This event includes wine tasting, cheese tasting, chocolate tasting, plus live music from Baja Blues Boys, prizes and surprises.  The event is open to the magazine’s subscribers, and you sign up for a complimentary subscription at www.eastcountymagazine.org.

ANTIQUES AND CRAFTS FAIR APRIL 16 IN FLINN SPRINGS

Summers Past Farms in Flinn Springs (15602 Olde Highway 80) invites you to an antiques and crafts fair on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Over Over 70 fine craftsman and expert artisans can be found at this event. Crafts, collectables, antiques, and a garden sale will all be held on a spacious lawn area at this event.

ALPINE WOMAN’S CLUB VICTORIAN TEA APRIL 16

The Alpine Woman’s Club Victorian Tea has been compared to the teas at the Hotel Del Coronado and Westgate Hotel.  This year’s event will be held Saturday, April 16 with sittings at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. 

You can showcase your finest hat, share good conversation with good friends and introduce your daughter or granddaughter to their first Victorian Tea. Entertainment will feature piano music by William D. Young, playing songs from yesteryear. There will also be a raffle, door prizes and other surprises. Period attire is recommended but not required.



 Space is limited. Proceeds benefit a scholarship fund and the maintenance of the historic Town Hall which was built in 1899. So far they have given away $110,000 in scholarships to local Alpine graduating seniors.

HISTORY IN THE HEADLINES APRIL 17 IN ALPINE

Del Hood, former editor of the Daily Californian and author of  the book “History in the Headlines” will speak on half a century of the most notable events in the El LCajon Valley on Surrounding Areas. His presentation will take place Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m. at the historic Alpine Town Hall (2156 Alpine Blvd. in Alpine), presented by the Alpine Woman’s Club.

CAJON CLASSIC CRUISES SEASON OPENS APRIL 20

The Cajon Classic Cruises season will rev to life starting April 20th in downtown El Cajon.  This annual family-friendly event will take place each Wednesday evening from  5 p.m. to 8 p.m. along Main Street near Magnolia.

CHALDEAN NIGHTS AT SYCUAN  APRIL 21st

Usama Zakaria and Sami Shamsi headline a night of music and dancing with the Nissou Band, DJ Matthew and belly dancer Tarsiana.  Apr 21, 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Sycuan Casino in El Cajon.

EARTH DAY AT THE LAVENDAR FARM APRIL 22

You're invited to Earth Day at the Keys Creek Lavendar Farm in Valley Center on Friday April 22nd. This special day at the farm from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. includes a talk from the farm's beekeeper about its bees, planting Milkweed seeds for the farm's butterfly garden, learning how to grow lavender, planting a herb garden, doing a distillation demonstration and walking the labyrinth.  Lunch will be included.  Guests are encouragted to bring your journal and enjoy the property between planting, lunch and educational talks.  For more information you can visit www.KeysCreekLavendarFarm.com.

 

LAKESIDE WESTERN DAYS PARADE APRIL 23

Lakeside’s Western Days Parade will roll out on Saturday, April 23 at 9:35 a.m. down Maine Street in downtown Lakeside.  Now in its 51st year, this year’s parade hosted by the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce will feature the theme "America Strong, Lakeside Strong."

The parade features equestrians, floats, marching bands and more.

SPRING GARDEN FESTIVAL AT CUYAMACA COLLEGE APRIL 23

The Spring Garden Festival at Cuyamaca College, in its 23rd year, is a family-friendly community celebration of spring and a greener future that attracts more than 3,000 visitors annually. This year's free festival, set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, features fun programs, exhibitors and demonstrations that will help you become a better gardener and learn how to conserve our precious resources.  Some festival highlights:

The renowned Cuyamaca College Ornamental Horticulture department will be holding its biggest plant sale of the year.

Faculty and students in the Ornamental Horticulture department will be presenting information on a wide variety of topics and answer questions. There will also be children's activities and exhibits, info on garden clubs and prize drawings. For details visit www.Cuyamaca.edu.

ARTIST RECEPTION AT MISSION TRAILS APRIL 24

The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation presents an exhibition featuring an award-winning plein air artist Marilyn Hallam on display from April 23rd through May 20th at the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center.  A reception honoring the artist will be held on Sunday, April 24th from 1 to 4 p.m. and the public is invited.

DANNY GREEN TRIO AT CUYAMACA COLLEGE APRIL 28

The Danny Green Trio, a critically acclaimed traditional and modern jazz group, will perform at the Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Center  (900 Rancho San Diego Parkway, El Cajon) on Thursday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m.  The trio has won a San Diego Music Award for best jazz album.  The performance is all part of the Spring Concert Series at Cuyamaca College.

ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION APRIL 30 IN EL CAJON

The City of El Cajon invites the public to an Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, April 30th at 8 a.m. in Hillslide Park (840 Buena Terrace). The City will be giving away free tree seedlings and light refreshments as they commemorate the city’s 18th year of receiving the Tree City USA award.

DINNER AND A CONCERT IN EL CAJON MAY 6

“Dinner & a Concert” Opening Night at the Prescott Promenade in downtown El Cajon kicks off Friday,May 6th with Clay Colton playing country rock. You can enjoy music and dancing every Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. from May 6 through October 7, bring a picnir or have dinner at one of the many restaurants in downtown El Cajon. COYOTE MUSIC FESTIVAL MAY 7 AT CUYAMACA COLLEGE

The Coyote Music Festival Returns to Cuyamaca College on Saturday, May 7th starting at 12 noon at Cuyamaca College (900 Rancho San Diego Parkway) on the Grand Lawn. ,Now in its eighth year, the entirely student-run festival provides the community with an afternoon of live, outdoor music. The festival also culminates a semester worth of work for students studying music, technology, recording, and business. EL MONTE FLUME TRAIL HIKE MAY 7th

Hikers will discover the Historical Flume that was built in the late 1800s to bring water from the Cuyamaca Mountains to the City of San Diego. Hikers will learn about the fauna and flora of Blossom Valley hill, view a tunnel that was built in the late 1800s and enjoy the gorgeous views of El Monte Valley.

This hike begins with a strenuous quarter-of-a-mile up-hill switchback section before hitting the Historical Flume Trail; the remaining trail is easy-to-moderate. It is 1 mile west of the tunnel and 1.5 mile east of the tunnel.

Meet the ranger at the staging area parking lot across street from the main park. Wear appropriate hiking shoes, sun protection and bring water. Inclement weather will cancel this event.  Saturday May 7 from 9 a.m.  to 11 a.m.
