BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTES TO CREATE COMMITTEE ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING

June 14, 2011 (Mt. Helix Patch)--n an effort to stem the tide of rising involvement by young people in pimping and prostitution, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted 5-0 to establish a committee of local law enforcement agencies to battle human trafficking and sexual exploitation of youth.

Supervisor Greg Cox called the issue "one of the most disgusting, depraving and destructive criminal operations in our county, and really, around the country.''

Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who oversees most of East County, including Spring Valley where the problem is becoming more prevalent, has been heavily involved with the issue since going along on a curfew sweep last year. During that sweep, the Sheriff's Department picked up more than 30 juveniles during the sweep, most of whom were teen girls.

“They were on the streets working–and they weren't working for themselves,” Jacob said. “They were working for their pimps. The pimps were gang members.”

June 13, 2011 (San Diego Union-Tribune)— Whatever it was that drove George Jakubec to create and stockpile pounds of powerful explosives in his Escondido-area home remained a mystery after the 55-year-old former computer software engineer was sentenced Monday in federal court to 30 years in prison.

A federal prosecutor said that after an “exhaustive” investigation authorities are sure of this: Jakubec was not connected to terrorism nor did he plan to use the explosives to blow up buildings or target people.

ALL HERE AGREE: PROP L TAKES THE BUDGET CAKE

June 14, 2011 (La Mesa Today)-- City staff went through the annual ritual of presenting the budget -- a two-year forecasting document -- and it quickly became clear to all who were listening that Proposition L is shielding the Jewel of the Hills from some of the pain being suffered in other municipalities.

If there was any doubt, Councilman Ernest Ewin, the most attentive on the dais to fiscal nuance, made it clear. What, he asked the budget staff, would the impact on this budget have been if we had not passed the local sales tax increase.
In a word, they responded: "Devastating.''
