Grossmont Healthcare District supporting new Campo clinic (San Diego Union-Tribune)

A new health care clinic under construction in Campo has been awarded a $1 million donation from the Grossmont Healthcare District to buy medical equipment. The district’s board of directors recently approved the grant to Mountain Health & Community Services Inc. for the new health center, which is expected to open in June.

Threat Forces Evacuation of Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (KPBS)

The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla and several other Jewish community centers around the country were evacuated Tuesday due to bomb threats….It was the third spate of such threats this month.

La Mesa looking for other groups to handle some downtown events (San Diego Union-Tribune)

La Mesa is hoping to take off its lederhosen for Oktoberfest, letting someone else to take on the annual downtown party of all things German. The City Council unanimously agreed last week to find another group, possibly the newly formed La Mesa Village Association.

Veterans’ choice program fails to target wait times even in Southern California (KPBS)

Congress passed the Veterans Choice law in 2014 to lower wait times for patients seeking care from the Veterans Health Administration. A year-long investigation by KPBS, NPR and other public media outlets revealed that the law often failed to work as intended.

The protests and outrage over President Trump's executive action to ban refugees from entering the U.S. continue. Civil rights and Muslim groups have sued over the order that would temporarily stop refugees and citizens from seven predominantly Muslim nations from coming to the U.S. But one Iraqi immigrant living in San Diego has been outspoken in his support for the President's executive order.

I-5 border traffic diverted from San Ysidro again (San Diego Union-Tribune)

For the fourth Sunday in a row, drivers heading southbound on Interstate 5 toward Tijuana found themselves diverted to Otay Mesa for several hours.

San Francisco sues Trump over sanctuary cities order (New York Times)

San Francisco on Tuesday became the first city in the country to sue President Trump over his order to withhold federal funding from so-called sanctuary cities, saying the order was unconstitutional.

California movement to secede gains momentum (Yahoo! News)

A campaign for California to secede from the rest of the country over Donald Trump's election is gaining momentum, with supporters allowed to start collecting signatures for the measure to be put to a vote. California's Secretary of State Alex Padilla gave the green light on Thursday for proponents of "California Nationhood" -- also known as Calexit -- to start collecting the nearly 600,000 signatures needed for the measure to qualify on the November 2018 ballot.

Rep. Hunter to Calif. Governor:  Nix illegal immigrants instead of cutting middle class scholarships (Washington Times)

“I struggle to understand the justification for putting illegal immigrants ahead of middle class American families,” said Rep. Duncan Hunter, a California Republican, in a letter to Mr. Brown. ... Mr. Hunter earlier this year introduced a bill to punish sanctuary campuses that protect illegal immigrants, shielding them from federal immigration agents. The bill would also strip federal funds from sanctuaries. In his letter he asked Mr. Brown to disclose how much California expects to spend on illegal immigrant students.

… So, where do California’s foreign born come from? More than half, or 53 percent, were born in Latin America, while 37 percent was born in Asia, according to the PPIC study. Mexico at 4.3 million, the Philippines at 812,000 and China at 760,000 are the leading countries of origin.
