Man Convicted of Killing Robert F. Kennedy Stabbed at Donovan State Prison: Source (NBC 7)

Law enforcement sources tell NBC 7 Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, the man convicted of murdering U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, was stabbed in a San Diego-area state prison and hospitalized. He was in stable condition as of late Friday, the Associated Press reported…He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Gavin Newsom, top Democrats strike deal to cap rent hikes in California (Sacramento Bee) 

… According to Newsom’s office, the proposed deal would cap annual rent increases at 5 percent plus inflation. It would be in effect through 2030, though it wouldn’t apply to housing built in the last 15 years.

If you believe newspapers play an essential role in strengthening democracy and holding powerful leaders accountable, now is the time to speak up about Assembly Bill 5. The bill, as currently written, could force many California newspapers out of business. It’s unlikely that Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, sought to create an existential threat to California’s free press when she authored AB 5.

Early investigation of boat fire suggests serious safety flaws aboard vessel where 34 died (Los Angeles Times)

A preliminary investigation into the Conception boat fire has suggested serious safety deficiencies aboard the vessel, including the lack of a “roaming night watchman” who is required to be awake and alert passengers in the event of a fire or other dangers, according to several law enforcement sources familiar with the inquiry. The probe also has raised questions about whether the crew was adequately trained and whether passengers received a complete safety briefing, said the source..

LAPD would remove homeless residents from high-risk fire zones under new rules  (Los Angeles Times)

With the threat of wildfires looming ahead of Santa Ana wind season, city leaders are drafting new rules that would send police officers to encampments in hillside areas to “remove” homeless residents. Officials say the rules are aimed at preventing wildfires and protecting the lives of homeless residents... “You have the threat of fires that can be potentially set off by fire encampments,” says City Councilmember Joe Buscaino, who serves on the committee. “It’s a threat to private property as well as public property.”
