In-Depth: $10 million effort to assess San Diego's aging dams (10 News)

The City of San Diego plans to spend $10 million to carefully assess the structural needs of its aging dams, which are among the oldest in California.... San Vicente, Miramar and Sutherland have the state’s highest rating of satisfactory. The state rates Morena, Barrett and Lake Murray as fair. The three dams in the worst shape, rated poor, are Lower Otay near Chula Vista, El Capitan near Alpine and Hodges in Rancho Bernardo.

Border arrests plunge 29% in June to the lowest of Biden's presidency as asylum halt takes hold (10 News)

Arrests for illegally crossing the border from Mexico plunged 29% in June, the lowest month of Joe Biden's presidency, according to figures released Monday that provide another window on the impact of a new rule to temporarily suspend asylum.

Poll finds majority of San Diego, Imperial County officeholders experienced threats (KPBS)

Two-thirds of officeholders in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties have received threats, according to the second phase of a University of San Diego survey on harassment of elected officials.  The initial findings showed no significant difference in race or party affiliation. But findings did show a huge gender gap.  Eight percent of men reported weekly intimidation, compared to 31% of women. Thirty-eight percent of men and 69% of women said they experienced hostility monthly. A social media analysis also showed local women politicians received up to four times as many aggressive replies as their male counterparts.

Hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, billions of dollars: The cost of extreme heat in California (Cal Matters)

... extreme heat has led to more deaths than wildfires and cost billions of dollars over a decade, according to the state insurance department.  Following through on a mandate from 2022,  a new report from the department looked at seven extreme heat events in the state from 2013 to 2022 and found they took the lives of several hundred Californians. The events also had a total economic impact of $7.7 billion in the form of lost wages and productivity, agricultural and manufacturing disruptions, power outages, infrastructure damage and more.
