KPBS BLOWS UP “THESE DAYS”, EXILES CLASSICAL MUSIC

May 10, 2011 (Voice of San Diego) -- Trumpeting its greater commitment to information programming, KPBS's radio station is dumping its overnight classical music format and replacing it with news shows. But it's also cutting an hour from the daily "These Days" public affairs show, its only program that focuses on San Diego.

Jim Sinegal, Wife Janet Make Donation To Support Scholarships

May 9, 2011 (10 News)-- San Diego State University announced Monday a $2.5 million donation from the chief executive and co-founder of Costco and his wife to support scholarships.
Jim Sinegal and his wife Janet, both SDSU alumni, have asked that their donation be used to help support students leaving the foster care system, to provide scholarships to students who want to become teachers and to support student veterans, according to Gina Jacobs, the university's media relations manager.

STATE’S HIGH SPEED RAIL WINS $300 M REJECTED BY FL

May 9, 2011 (San Diego Union-Tribune)-- Once again, one state’s disdain is California’s gain.
The state today received $300 million from the federal Department of Transportation for the high-speed rail project. The money comes from more than $2 billion earmarked for an Orlando—Tampa high-speed rail project that was killed by Gov. Rick Scott.
 

California is also receiving $68 million for the purchase of 15 rail passenger cars and four quick-acceleration locomotives for the Pacific Surfliner, San Joaquin, and Capitol Corridor train systems, according to the federal DOT announcement.

TEEN SUSPECT DETAINED WITH BIG ARSENAL

May 9, 2011 (San Diego Union-Tribune) -- TIJUANA – The drug-trafficking problem ends the day weapons are no longer sold because criminals will no longer feel safe, said Gilberto Landeros, commander of the Second Military Zone.
 

“Weapons revitalize criminal groups,” he said, speaking at Morelos barracks after presenting for the media a young man allegedly associated with the Sinaloa drug cartel who was detained Saturday morning, the result of an anonymous tip.
 

The commander identified the suspect as 18-year-old Héctor Manuel Muñoz Solís. He was allegedly transporting an arsenal in his SUV that included a .50 caliber Barrett rifle and a U.S.-made anti-tank weapon, still in its case along with the manual.

CITY SAVES $323 MILLION ON RETIREE HEALTH CARE

The agreement would still leave an $800 million shortfall in promised benefits
May 6, 2011 (San Diego Union-Tribune)--The city of San Diego's leaders signed off on a tentative agreement Friday with labor unions that they say would shave $323 million off a $1.1 billion shortfall in money needed longterm to pay lifetime health care for retired city workers.

NO SOUND WALL FOR LA MESA MEADOWS; GARFIELD NEIGHBORS LOSE BID AT PLANNING COMMISSION

April 21, 2011 (La Mesa)Acoustics experts said an 11-foot sound barrier on state Route 125—costing more than $1 million—wasn't needed given recent studies. Planners vote 5-2 to allow the promised wall to be dropped.
