Energy projects spur alarm among Indians (San Diego Union-Tribune)

November 5, 2011 -- Rattling gourds and scattering acorn dust, a small clutch of Native Americans recently staged a sacred ceremony atop a tiny mesa on the eastern side of the rocky divide between San Diego and Imperial counties.
The late-morning gathering marked the emergence of a rare alliance.

La Mesa-Spring Valley teachers, staff toss lifeline to janitors, grounds crews (Mount Helix Patch)

November 3, 2011 -- The La Mesa-Spring Valley school board Tuesday approved a deal with its two employee unions that changes their health-care provider and makes $100,000 available to hire custodians and groundskeepers.*

Not enough help for growing refugee population (KPBS)

November 7, 2011 -- On a recent Friday morning, students of Iraqi descent practiced phrases they might need for a job interview in the language lab at Cuyamaca College.
One student – a thin young man, dressed in hip clothes – speaks into a computer microphone: “Why should I give you the job? I’m hard working and work full-time.”
He’s lucky to be in a class. English as a Second Language, or ESL, courses, are in high demand at Cuyamaca, which is located in San Diego's East County.

Rep. Duncan Hunter: Small businesses should pay no taxes (La Mesa Patch)

November 7, 2011 -- Rep. Duncan D. Hunter told a packed room Monday morning that small businesses “literally should be paying no taxes.”

His 25-minute talk came at a small-business seminar at the La Mesa Community Center sponsored by the state Board of Equalization, the agency that collects state sales and use taxes.

Iconic East County nursery to close (San Diego Union-Tribune)
November 2, 2011 -- The folksy business that time forgot is coming to a bittersweet close.

All dried up in San Diego County (California City News)
November 1, 2011 -- Unless Legislators figure out how to make the Salton Sea smaller and less salty—something they promised to figure out long ago—a 2003 water pact between the Imperial Valley and San Diego County could face an end
In 2003, in an effort to provide the woefully dry Southern California with a plentiful water supply, the water-rich Imperial Irrigation District signed a pact to transfer some of its share of the Colorado River to the San Diego County Water Authority via the Colorado Aqueduct. San Diego gets its water, and the Imperial Valley gets regular payments from San Diego.

Remaining family members, the American Indian Veterans Association and the Mesa Grande Band of Diegueno Mission Indians have asked the Patriot Guard Riders to assemble and welcome him home.

Democrats face off in long bid to unseat Issa (San Diego Union-Tribune)
November 5, 2011  -- Democrat Jerry Tetalman wants you to know his congressional campaign against one of the country’s most powerful politicians is serious business.
The former nurse turned real estate broker will tell you this despite conceding that his chances of upsetting Republican Rep. Darrell Issa are, depending on your level of sanguinity, ultra-slim to none.

Science gets short shrift in California elementary schools, study finds (Sacramento Bee)

Gretchen Bly, a first-grade teacher at Rancho Cordova Elementary School, generally teaches about 90 minutes of science a week, integrating it into the curriculum as much as possible.

Initiatives could protect funds for San Diego, other counties (San Diego Union-Tribune)

November 5, 2011 -- An alliance of law enforcement and government officials last week began what’s expected to be tough fight to protect funding for public safety and other services shifted to counties under Gov. Jerry Brown’s realignment plan.
The group filed a ballot measure that, if approved by voters next year, would bar the state from redirecting the money and prohibit lawmakers from shifting more responsibility to local governments unless they provide funding.
