EAST COUNTY STUDENT LAUREN SMYLE IS FINALIST IN $20,000 SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST: ONLINE VOTES FROM COMMUNITY REQUESTED

March 13, 2009 (La Mesa)--Lauren Smyle, a resident of La Mesa and a senior at West Hills High School in Santee, is one of 11 students in the western United States--and the only student from East Counnty--to advance to the finals in a $20,000 scholarship competition. Sponsored by Zinch.com, the contest enables students to advance based on votes received online. Friends, family and community members are invited to help Smyle by casting your votes. While looking at colleges and scholarship opportunities online, Smyle signed up with ZINCH (www.zinch.com) which helps students and colleges connect and also provides information on scholarships.

 

She is now in a contest to win a $20,000 scholarship through the Zinch.com website. Selected by the Zinch Scholarship Selection Committee, the criteria for finalists included academic achievement and the embodiment of Zinch's motto that students are "more than a test score." Smyle is an honors student and scholar athlete with a 4.585 GPA (ranked 7th in her class) and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. She is also secretary of her class, organized the senior prom, was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by her classmates, and is involved in several clubs. In addition, she volunteers to help with the yearbook staff at her former K-8 school, Christ Lutheran, in La Mesa. She enjoys music, art, sports, and traveling. Hoping to attend UCSD in the fall, Smyle wants to major in engineering.

 

The Contest started with 1,700 students nationwide. Smyle was one of 16 students from California who made it through the State Round, and one of 11 students in the west region to make it through to the field of the 54 finalists, Next up, she competes in the "March Madness Bracket" portion of the contest which starts on March 18th.

 

To help Smyle advance in the scholarship competition, go to www.zinch.com and click on sign up. Under "who am I" choose "other" if you are not a student at West Hills or another school, or choose one of the other options listed. Complete the short sign up procedure. You will get a confirmation email and once you click "confirm" on the email, you can then log in and vote for Smyle in the top 64 under the north region.
