May 20, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) -- On any day in this beautiful place in San Diego’s East County, you will find para-gliders--hang-gliders sailing the winds high above the El Monte Valley. Take off point is roughly 1,800 feet above sea level and is located in Blossom Valley, just South of I-8 and Dunbar Lane in El Cajon. I have often seen them soaring as high as 4,000 feet above El Cajon Mountain (known locally as El Capitan for its resemblance to a Yosemite landmark) accompanied by raptors of every kind.
Dare to take a flight! San Diego does offer lessons. http://sandiegoparagliding.com/
Many of the Para-gliders you will see in my video are locals who own their own gear. On several occasions I have been invited to go for a ride, but I prefer both feet planted firmly on the ground, thank you.
Next time you’re heading east on I-8 look towards the big rock we locals call El Capitan and you will see the the sky filled with these beautifully colored para-gliders. Or if you would just like to sit and watch, drive three miles east on El Monte road in Lakeside ca. and look heavenward.
