U.S. FACES POWER VACUUM IN MIDEAST

WHITE HOUSE SEEKS TO PHASE OUT FANNIE, FREDDIE

February 11, 2011 (NPR) -- The Obama administration announced its plans for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on Friday, saying it would like to see the mortgage giants phased out over the next five to seven years. The pair had to be taken over by the government at the height of the financial crisis, and have so far cost taxpayers more than $130 billion. But, troubled as they are, Fannie and Freddie now dominate the nation's housing finance system — which makes eliminating them a dicey proposition.

ALGERIA POLICE TO STIFLE EGYPT-INSPIRED PROTEST

February 12, 2011 (Reuters) - Thousands of police in riot gear were in position in the center of the Algerian capital on Saturday to stop a planned demonstration from mimicking the uprising which forced out Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Officials have banned the opposition march, setting the stage for possible clashes between police and demonstrators who are demanding greater democratic freedoms, a change of government, and more jobs. Mubarak's resignation on Friday, and last month's overthrow of Tunisia’s leader, have electrified the Arab world and led many to ask which country could be next in a region where a flammable mix of authoritarian rule and popular anger are the norm.

ISLAMIST REBEL SAYS HE ORDERED RUSSIAN BOMBING

February 7, 2011 (Reuters)--Islamist rebel leader Doku Umarov said on Monday he had ordered a suicide bombing that killed 36 people at Russia's busiest airport last month. Umarov, 46, speaking in a video carried by the Islamist website www.Kavkazcenter.com, said there would be further such attacks in pursuit of an independent Muslim state governed by Sharia law in Russia's Caucasus region -- a territory embracing Chechnya, Dagestan and other nearby territories.

TUNISIA CALLS UP ARMY RESERVE TO TACKLE VIOLENCE

February 8, 2011 (Reuters)--Tunisia asked military reservists to report for duty and warned police they would be fired for skipping work on Monday, in a new drive to restore order three weeks after an uprising overthrew the president. Security officials in the coalition government put in place after President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia have said there is a conspiracy by officials close to the old administration to spread chaos and take back power.

DID BILL TRY TO REDEFINE RAPE? GOP BACKS DOWN AFTER PUBLIC OUTCRY

February 3, 2011 (Christian Science Monitor) --A GOP-backed House bill aimed at limiting federal funding of abortions used the phrase 'forcible rape,' suggesting that abortions for other kinds of rape would not be covered. Critics called it an attempt to redefine rape, and the GOP relented. But the bill is still controversial.
