BANKS NEAR DEAL WITH SEC


April 15, 2011 (Wall Street Journal)--U.S. securities regulators are in talks with several major Wall Street banks to settle fraud allegations related to mortgage-bond deals that helped unleash the financial crisis, according to people familiar with the matter.

IMAGING DEVICES LATE TO BATTLEFIELDS

 

April 16, 2011 (USA Today)--Troops in Afghanistan may have to wait 10 to 12 months for advanced medical machinery for treating concussions, raising concerns among top military leaders that the equpment will not be available for potentially hundreds of sevicemembers with mild brain injuries.
 

Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, requested in November that magnetic resonance imaging machines, or MRIs, be sent to the battlefield to help doctors see and better treat an otherwise invisible wound. But efforts to send two MRI machines have met with resistance from military medical leaders who do not share the same sense of urgency

JAPAN UPGRADES NUCLEAR CRISIS TO SAME LEVEL AS CHERNOBYL

Nuclear and industrial safety agency raises severity rating to maximum on international nuclear and radiological event scale

April 12, 2011 (UK Guardian)-- Japan has raised the severity level of its nuclear crisis to the maximum seven, putting the emergency at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant on a par with Chernobyl.

TEPCO TO COMPENSATE JAPAN’S NUCLEAR VICTIMS

April 15, 2011 (BBC)-- The Japanese government has ordered the operator of the nuclear plant damaged by last month's quake and tsunami to pay compensation to affected families.
About 48,000 families who lived within 30km (18 miles) of the Fukushima Daiichi plant will be eligible.
