Modernized Career Technical Education building provides state-of-the-art workspaces to students

January 26, 2012 (El Cajon)--Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) and El Cajon Valley High School officials dedicated a newly renovated metal works facility and special education suites with an honorary chain-cutting ceremony yesterday.

The renovation of the Career Technical Education (CTE) building, also known as building 600, doubled the size of the facilities for the Metal Masters Program with a total of 7,000 square feet and 28 new welding booths. Each lab received technology upgrades with modern materials and workspaces through partnerships with large welding equipment and supply manufacturers.

The north side of the building now has classroom suites for special education students, complete with life skills modules that advocate independence and build confidence for students with disabilities. The special education suites include three classrooms, a living skills lab, personal hygiene training areas, focus rooms and a flexible support system for hanging furniture and sensory equipment.

“El Cajon Valley High School is the only public education program in the county that provides American Welding Society Certification,” said El Cajon Valley Principal Dr. Erin Richison. “Over the past thirty years, the program has given our students the opportunity to explore possible careers in manufacturing and welding, and has turned out thousands of certified welders.”

The project was respectively funded by local voter approved Proposition U, ROP capital reserves and state facility grants. The construction aligns with GUHSD’s CTE plan to repair and modernize old classrooms for CTE student programs and is one of many new facilities constructed under the leadership governing board. The project team includes program manager Gafcon, Inc., architect Sprotte+Watson Architectural Planning and general contractor Erickson-Hall Construction.
