March 2, 2010 (SDSU) – Four reported sexual assaults have occurred in the San Diego State University area in the past two weeks, including one case where the suspect reportedly broke in to the victim’s home. In addition, a man was robbed at gunpoint and another was beaten during a robbery on campus.

“We don’t think they are related at this point, said Captain Secka in the SDSU Police Department. “I think it is an unfortunate coincidence. Some of the cases are isolated incidences off campus, which are not our primary areas of patrols, though we work very closely with San Diego Police. We also emphasize to students to take responsibility for your own safety – traveling in groups, not accepting drinks from strangers if you do drink at a party.” He also advised students to “know where you are, know where you’re going and try to avoid putting yourself in a situation that may expose you to this kind of risk,” while acknowledging that this advice would not have helped in every case.

On February 28, a female victim reported that she was drugged and assaulted at an off-campus party near Montezuma Road and 63rd Street in the early morning hours. No suspect description is available.

On the same date, another female victim reported that a man broke into her home at 1 a.m. and tried to sexually assault her near 55th Street and Mary Lane. She escaped and the man fled in a white pick-up truck. He is described as a Hispanic male, 26 to 30 years old, 5 feet 4 inches, with a stocky build. He wore a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and black boots.

Also on February 28, a male victim was reportedly robbed at gunpoint around midnight while walking near Rockford Drive and Dorothy Drive. Two men, both wearing beanie caps, drove up in a gray mini-van. The driver got out and pointed a handgun at the victim, demanding his belongings. Suspects fled east on Dorothy Drive. The driver is described as a Hispanic male, 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 10 inches, skinny with black curly hair. The passenger, a black male 25 to 30 years old, is 5 feet nine, 150 pounds.

On February 19, a female victim reported that she was sexually assaulted in the early morning hours in an apartment on the fourth floor of Fraternity Row. She and the suspect left a party at Kappa Sigma together a short time earlier. The suspect is described as a dark-skinned male, possibly Hispanic, wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt and black basketball-type shorts.

On February 17 at 4:20 p.m., a male victim was robbed in SDSU Parking structure 6, level 2. He was battered an sustained moderate injuries. The assailant took cash and a red/blue Jansport backpack.

On February 14, a female victim reported she was raped, possibly in a residence hall community, in the early morning hours. No details or suspect description were provided.

Some of the above crimes are being investigated by San Diego Police, others by the SDSU Police Department. For details and information on who to contact if you have information on any of these attacks, visit http://www.dps.sdsu.edu/bulletins.htm.

SDSU Police urge students to use the “buddy system” for safety’s sake. In addition, safety escorts are available dusk to dawn to and from any campus location by calling 619-594-6659. SDSU Police also urge students to program the campus police phone number into their cell phones in case of emergency: 619-594-1991.
