September 1, 2011 (Alpine) ---- A free Alpine Viejas Days Resource Fair for Seniors and Veterans Benefits on Sept. 21 will offer help for people of all ages.  Information, opportunities and screenings will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center at 1830 Alpine Blvd.

“It’s for the entire family,” said Jerry Barber of Descanso, an advocate for seniors and disabled people who is coordinating the Resource Fair. People who have older relatives and military veterans will find considerable help during the four-hour event, which is sponsored by Albertsons/Sav-on and the Joint Outreach Service Office of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Information will be available about legal matters, financial assistance, home care, residential issues, retirement, skilled nursing, mortgages, volunteer efforts, education and security.

“Some bigger things (of interest) will be the VFW-American Legion benefits,” Barber said. Many older women don’t realize that they still have benefits, even though their husbands worked at another job after retiring from the military before they died, the advocate said. Free screenings, including testing for falls, also will be offered at the Resource Fair. VFW-American Legion Service officers will be there, along with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department with information about its programs. Home Instead Senior Care, Age Advantage, Visiting Angels Home Care, Better Life Mobility, LightBridge Hospice, Country Hills Health Care, Mountain Health & Community Services and Fall Control Systems will be there, too.

Newbridge College in El Cajon is providing volunteers to help with the fair. “Newbridge will have their information there if you want to get into college and get into a medical career,” Barber said. Vendor registration for limited space is first-come, first-served. Spaces are $30 each.
